Custom Shopify Storefronts
on a platform that already runs the hard parts

Checkout, payments, PCI scope, hosting that holds through a campaign — Shopify does all of it, and doing it yourself is rarely worth the money. What's left is where the work actually is: theme architecture, apps, and the parts of checkout the platform lets you touch — plus knowing which of its limits to design around instead of fight.

How We Approach Shopify

The platform hands you a lot for free — the skill is knowing where that stops

  • Theme architecture, not theme edits
  • Custom apps where the sandbox ends
  • Checkout UI extensions & Functions
  • Metafields & metaobjects modelled
  • Apps audited before install
  • Migrations with a redirect map

You get a checkout that converts and keeps card data out of your scope, hosting and a CDN that hold through a launch, tax and fraud tooling, and an admin your merchandising team can run on day one. None of that is worth rebuilding, and most custom commerce projects lose a year discovering it.

It is a sandbox, though, and the walls are real: checkout is Shopify's until you're on Plus or reaching for Functions and UI extensions, the APIs are rate-limited and paginated, Liquid renders on their servers, and every app you install is another script in the storefront and another vendor in your uptime. We design around those edges deliberately — and say so early when what you want sits outside them.

What we optimise for

A storefront that stays fast once the apps and tracking pixels arrive, a data model that survives the next catalogue change, and a theme your team can edit without opening a ticket.

What We Do

Where custom work actually pays off

08Service lines

  • Platform Fit & Scoping

    Strategy

Whether Shopify is the right call, and on which plan. We walk through the requirements that tend to decide it — B2B pricing rules, subscriptions, multi-region tax and currency, checkout changes — and flag early which ones need Plus, which need an app, and which are simply outside the sandbox.

    Shopify engineering

  • Store Build & Data Model

    Core

Products, variants, collections and the metafields and metaobjects that carry everything the product schema doesn't. Getting this wrong is what forces a re-platform two years later, so we model it before anyone opens the theme editor.

    Shopify engineering

  • Theme Architecture

    Design

Sections, blocks and settings designed so merchandisers can build pages without breaking the design system — Online Store 2.0 patterns, Liquid that doesn't loop over the whole catalogue, and a build pipeline with the theme in version control rather than edited live.

    Shopify engineering

  • App Development

    Apps

Custom apps when the store needs behaviour the platform doesn't ship: admin tooling, storefront widgets via theme app extensions, checkout UI extensions, and Shopify Functions for discount, delivery and payment logic. Built against the API limits rather than into them.

    Shopify engineering

  • Integrations

    Integration

ERP, PIM, CRM, 3PL, subscriptions and marketing platforms — with the boring parts handled properly: webhook retries and idempotency, reconciliation when a sync fails at 2am, and inventory that doesn't drift between systems.

    Shopify engineering

  • Migrations

    Migration

Moves from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce or a custom stack. Products, customers and order history mapped field by field, a redirect map built from your actual traffic before cutover, and the integrations reconnected — with a rehearsal on a development store first.

    Shopify engineering

  • Performance & Storefront Speed

    Performance

On Shopify most of the weight is added, not inherited: app scripts, tracking pixels, unbounded section loops, uncompressed imagery. We measure what each one costs, cut or defer it, and set a budget the theme has to keep meeting.

    Shopify engineering

  • Maintenance & Support

    Support

Theme updates that don't undo your customisations, app reviews as they change and get abandoned, API version upgrades before deprecation deadlines, monitoring, and a queue for the changes a live store keeps generating.

Why Choose Shopify?

What you get for not building it yourself

Shopify absorbs the work teams consistently underestimate: PCI scope, a checkout that has been optimised harder than yours will be, capacity for the day your campaign lands, tax tables and fraud screening. You trade some control for it. For most catalogues, that trade is the right one.

  • No-codeDay-to-day operations

An admin your team already runs

Products, inventory, orders, discounts and refunds are core behaviour with a UI merchandisers learn in an afternoon. Every hour not spent building internal commerce tooling is an hour on the storefront instead.

    Shopify advantage

  • ThousandsApps in the store

An app store for the long tail

Reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, shipping rules, ERP connectors — someone has built it. That is the fastest route to a working feature and the fastest route to a slow storefront, so which apps you install is a real architectural decision.

    Shopify advantage

  • PCI scopeStays with Shopify

Checkout, and its scope, are theirs

Card data never touches your infrastructure, and the checkout flow is tuned on more traffic than you will ever see. The flip side is that it is Shopify's to change — deep customisation needs Plus, Functions or checkout UI extensions.

    Shopify advantage

  • Mobile-firstOut of the box

    Storefront basics come for free

Responsive themes, image CDN and resizing, and mobile-first defaults out of the box. Whether it stays fast is down to what you add on top: theme code, app scripts and third-party tags.

    Shopify advantage

  • Built-inSEO & campaigns

    Marketing plumbing included

Sitemaps and canonical tags, discount engine, abandoned-cart flows, analytics and the sales channels for social and marketplaces. Enough to launch without a marketing stack, and hooks for one when you have it.

    Shopify advantage

  • ManagedHosting & CDN

    Capacity you don't provision

Hosting, CDN and scaling belong to Shopify, so a campaign spike is their problem rather than a night for your ops team. Your side of the bargain is a theme that doesn't waste the headroom they've given you.

    Shopify advantage

How We Work

How we build on Shopify
and where we push back

Shopify makes it easy to bolt on until the storefront is slow and nobody knows which app owns which script. These are the habits that keep that from happening.

  • We tell you when Shopify isn't the answer

Some requirements — bespoke checkout logic below what Functions expose, unusual B2B contract pricing, a catalogue whose variant maths exceeds the platform's limits — cost more to force onto Shopify than to build elsewhere. Better to hear that in week one.

  • Theme code in version control

The theme is a repository with branches, review and a deploy step, not a live editor with a Downloads folder of backups. Changes ship to a development store first, and any release can be rolled back.

  • An app budget, tracked

Every app is a monthly fee, a script on the storefront and a vendor who can break or disappear. We keep a running list of what each one costs in money and milliseconds, and remove the ones that stopped paying for themselves.

  • Performance treated as a budget

A page-weight and script budget set at design time and checked against the live catalogue, with third-party tags deferred or dropped. Storefront speed decays quietly, so it needs a number, not a good intention.

  • Handover, not lock-in

Documented data model, theme structure, app inventory and deploy steps. If your team wants to run it themselves afterwards, they can — and we would rather that than be the only ones who understand the store.

How We Build

From catalogue model
to a store that takes orders

Six steps. The platform decisions come first, because on Shopify the expensive mistakes are architectural — the wrong data model, or an app you can't get out of later.

  1. Step 01

    Requirements & platform decisions

Catalogue shape, pricing and tax rules, markets and currencies, fulfilment, and which systems have to talk to the store. Out of that comes the plan: Shopify tier, the data model, what each app is for, and what has to be custom.

  2. Step 02

    Data model & content structure

Products, variants, collections, metafields and metaobjects mapped before design starts — including how the merchandising team will actually maintain them. Rework here is cheap; rework after 40,000 SKUs are loaded is not.

  3. Step 03

    Design

Templates designed as reusable sections and blocks with the settings merchandisers need, so campaign pages get built without a developer. Product, collection, cart and the checkout surfaces you can influence get the most attention.

  4. Step 04

    Build

Theme development in Git with Shopify CLI against a development store, custom apps and extensions where the platform stops, integrations wired with retries and idempotent handlers, and a performance budget enforced as sections land.

  5. Step 05

    QA & launch

Test orders across payment methods, tax and shipping combinations, discount edge cases, and device and browser passes — then the cutover: DNS, redirect map from the old URLs, analytics and pixels verified, and a rollback plan ready.

  6. Step 06

    Run and improve

Monitoring on the storefront and the integrations, API version upgrades ahead of deprecations, app reviews as they change, and a backlog of merchandising and conversion work that the store's own data prioritises.

Shopify Development — FAQ

The questions worth asking before you build on Shopify

Checkout limits, apps, headless, migrations and what actually drives the cost. Something not covered?

06Questions answered

On the standard plans: the branding, and the fields and content that checkout UI extensions expose. Not the flow itself. On Plus you get more room — checkout extensibility, B2B features, and Shopify Functions for discount, delivery, payment and cart logic that runs on Shopify's side. What almost nobody gets is arbitrary custom code in the middle of checkout, and that is deliberate: it is what keeps the conversion rate and the PCI scope where they are. If your requirement genuinely needs a bespoke checkout, that's a signal Shopify may be the wrong platform, and we'd rather say it early.
